Racism in X-Men Comic Books

This is a pronounced and very blatant reference to racism in X-Men comics. In this case, "mutie" is the equivalent of "nigger" in the Marvel Universe for mutants. Honestly, I never thought of mutie as being a terrible word or didn't get the sense that X-Men characters were even offended by this. However, I guess they are offended. Clearly, Kitty Pryde did not like what the "Rock was cooking."

A Look at the Shortpacked Comic Strip!

I recently came across this awesome strip called "Shortpacked!" Although it is geared toward the nerd community, I do believe that it can be a really funny strip to the uninitiated. Generally, all my favorite strips are superhero-related. Here are a few featuring Batman and Captain America!

This is an excellent piece of commentary regarding the ridiculous "alternative" action figures for superheroes. When would Superman ever need a rocket launcher? When would Spider-Man need "Hydro-Vehicle Action"? Of course, these costumes almost always make no sense. This was a lovely strip.

Well, I always did wonder how Captain America adjusted to the modern times. Actually, Captain America joined the Avengers in 1963-1964. As a result, it really does make me wonder about the Captain American prior to the later 60s when "shit started going KRAZY." Back in those times, the extent of dealing with complicated issue such as race was primarily done through the X-Men. Of course, this X-Men team consisted of "vanilla white" individuals who just happened to have powers. Today, the X-Men team serves better as a homosexuality metaphor. This can be best seen in X-Men 2/3 with the Iceman coming out to his family and Angel trying to hide his true nature with a razor in the bathroom. God, X-Men 3 was terrible despite a great opening number...

Iron Man review should be up later this week. In a brief summary though, Iron Man is the BEST start to any superhero franchise in recent memory. It's like having Spider-Man 2 or X-Men 2, but as the opening film of a trilogy. For those who thought this was looking bad, I think you really need to take a closer look. This is easily the most enjoyable film of the year if you're a comic book fan or not...

This isn't even my official review!

The X-Men Manga....Holy Crap.

Del Rey recently announced and showed off some work from the upcoming Manga interpretations of Wolverine and the X-Men. Instead of going off on some huge unnecessary bullshit about how ridiculous this concept is, I'll just comment on the various shots of work.

I've stared at this long and hard. It's not our Wolverine. He's a teenage Wolverine. Hell, I've never ever seen Wolverine as a teenager. He looks appropriately angsty, lanky, and just a little boyish for a Japanese protagonist. As a result, this design isn't bad. It's not as bad as the first design.

Man, this design was just AWFUL. It makes me feel like I could hand Wolverine his ass after making him apologize profusely for accidentally bumping into me.
Stephanie: "HE LOOKS LIKE TOTORO.
FUCK THAT SHIT."

You know, this is actually a decent design. Alright, he looks like Totoro if he got an Ivy degree, but I sort of got a warm fuzzy feeling when I see this picture. Plus, if you are going to "japanize" something, you might as well go all the way with some of the characters.

Well, I hate her already. Seriously, I like Kitty Pryde. After killing her off in the regular comic books, I was looking forward to this. Okay, I wasn't really, but this design just screams like a rip-off of every other gusty, female character in any show. It doesn't feel like the character. Well, it gets worse.Iceman turns emo and Nightcrawler is going to unfreeze his cold heart. Well, that's it. I'm going home. Fuck that.
